1. Have
needs/ expectations been met for the client brief and target audience?
I would
like to say that the needs and the expectations have been met as I was asked to
write a script for unit 41 which is the documentary unit. This documentary is
about the art form Tang soo do and the way it helps people develop the
confidence and how the art form has an impact on people’s lives. The masters
explained how the team has travelled to Holland and how they perform in the
competitions. I needed to include some
form of dialogue and music in the script but also make the script 5 minutes
long as the script will need to match the footage.
My target
audience for this script is 11 to 18 as Tang soo needs youths to keep the
community going. In the script the music relates to the target audience this is because it is hip hop which
suits the age demographic also the fact that the team travels which cost a lot
of money targets the disposable income of A,B.C1 but the traveling to places in
the world acts as escapism for the people in the art. The
script suits the target audience as in the script the team is both genders
which covers both gender type and shows that tang soo do is for everyone this
is shown in some of the footage as it include girls and boys in the competition
which challenges stereotypes and appeals to a wide audience. Both genders are
getting judged the same way and the marking is not biased. The Tang soo do
script meets the expectations as the script answers are from my
masters explaining about the martial art and how the age range will love
the art form.
2. What
were the clients likes and dislikes?
The
client liked it how I have shown the travel of the team and the
progression they took through the journey. They also liked how my mode of
address suited my target audience as the mode of an address is peer to
peer. This is shown in the documentary as the dialogue is set
out in an interview way.
The
Writers Group also said that the interviews with the masters are in the correct
areas and the V/O meant that the interviews also explain what’s happening in
the shot and what the terminology is. One thing they said that they didn't like
was the way I ended the script as I should include some shots of them maybe
lining up or ending the competition. I will be changing this on my script.
It is
important to have this feedback so I am able to improve the script and develop
the narrative. The dialogue needs to be correct so then the masters can be
directed to say the correct things also the footage needs to cut to and cut
away in the correct sequence as the editor can edit the documentary. The
Writers Group didn’t like it that I didn’t cut frequently. I needed to add more
which would mean the pace of my documentary speeds up.
3. What
are the relevant changes that need to make to the script?
The
Writers Group asked me to change when the music fades in and out so then the
documentary has a better atmosphere also the dialogue will stand out a lot more
if the music is faded in the background this creates ambient background sounds.
The Writers Group also said I need to include more V/O when a master is
answering the questions to give the viewer a better understanding of the words
they are saying.
One other
change I have to do is the way the documentary ends as they want me to include
the team lining up or team traveling back this will help the documentary cut
away also it would be a good ending for the documentary. They ask me to include
more cut to and cut away but also to include more camera angles when having the
interview so the camera isn’t always one direction when the master is talking
but also to have many camera techniques so for example the camera panning,
camera tracking and camera tilt up and down. But also include various of camera angles such as
high angle, low angle.
4. Is the
content of the product correct based on form and style?
My script
layout is for a documentary. You can clearly see that the script is split up
for each shot and when the interviews starts with each master and also
when I am asking the questions to the master. It is also set out like a
documentary as the beginning has a montage to set the scene and it picks up the
pace in the middle which slows down again at the end. The documentary has met
all the needs as it includes music, dialogue, V/O and location
instructions and camera information. The music included is KZ. Pelican and
this fades in and out throughout the script.
The
script is a very formal as the people who are in the interviews are very
important and speak about important life lessons but also about the art form
and how it develops you as a person. The font all the way through is
courier new as that is what most professional scripts are written in but also
it is very easy to read. The mode of address in my script is peer to peer as
the masters are informing you on the art form. However the informal is because of there dialect and what country they are all from. The style of the script
teaches the viewer about the art form. The way the team dresses suggest
that they are all one and stand together this creates a form of confidence for
the team as they overcome any challenge. The suit they wear
represents their loyalty of the art which makes the audience respect them and
see them as respectful and disciplined this needs to include a range of shot
types to support the V/O of the masters speaking.
5. Does
the script meet legal and ethical requirements?
My script has no violence,
offensive language and inappropriate behaviour this is because the script is
aimed more at a younger audience also then no masters or viewers of
the short film will get offended. The BBFC will not have a problem
with my script as they require no misleading information and my script provides
the truth always this makes it PG rating and anybody many watch it. For example this documentary can be shown before
watershed as it is appropriate for a younger audience as it teachers about Tang
soo do. No copyright is needed for this documentary as all the companies I have
included are actually sponsored by the art form and support it. Also the logo
of the region can be used as I have permission from the grandmaster himself.
For the music I will be using a guys called KZ. He is a very skilled artist and
publishes his music for free however if I want to use it all I need to do is link
him into the documentary with this permission I would also need him to sign a release and consent form. My script will not offend anybody as in the script it
is mutual all the way through for example HO SIK PAC has a very calming voice
which is juxtaposed due to the sport. As my documentary is about fighting the conflict
that happens in the documentary will be fine as there is no blood or gore. The
locations used for the documentary are all public areas so I am able to film if
I wanted to. The only location I needed to get permission for is the Worksop
leisure centre. But that was no problem as we are used to training in that
location. The masters and all the people in Tang Soo Do agree to be in the
documentary so when I’m creating a time lapse they don’t mind being on the
camera. The Tang soo do documentary does not include any slander that may
discriminate or be harmful to another but the documentary is positive and
encouraging about the sport but also to advertise and promote the business for
revenue.
